Google’s AI Local Pack Is Showing a Third as Many Businesses

If you run a restoration company, the three results in the map box have been the whole ball game for years. Rank there and the phone rings. Rank fourth and you may as well be invisible. That box is now being replaced in some searches by an AI version, and the new one has room for fewer of you.

The numbers come from Places Scout, which went through Sterling Sky’s ranking reports across 322 markets in the United States. They are worth sitting with.

Three packs named 18,330 companies. AI packs named 5,943.

Same markets, same kinds of searches. The traditional three pack put 18,330 different businesses in front of people. The AI local pack managed 5,943. That is roughly a third as many companies getting seen at all.

It would be easy to write that off as a quirk of a few odd cities. It is not.

Three figures: 322 markets measured, 88 percent showed fewer unique businesses, 32 percent as many businesses named overall

In 88 percent of those 322 markets, the AI pack named fewer unique businesses than the three pack did. 283 markets out of 322. Shrinking is the normal case, not the exception.

What actually changed on the screen

Two things, and the second one gets less attention than it deserves.

First, the AI pack often shows one or two businesses where the old box showed three. Second, it does not carry a call button. Someone who wanted to ring you in one tap now has to go somewhere else to find a number.

There is a third detail that matters more than either. The companies named in the AI pack are frequently not the ones that held the three pack for that search. It is not the same list trimmed down. It is a different list.

Meanwhile, paid results took more of the space

Local pack ads rose from 1 percent to 22 percent visibility and Local Services Ads from 11 percent to 31 percent

Over the same stretch, local pack ads went from about 1 percent visibility to 22 percent, and Local Services Ads, the ones carrying the green check, went from 11 percent to 31 percent. Fewer free slots, more paid ones, in the same amount of screen.

If you have felt your map rankings holding steady while the calls thinned out, this is a large part of why. You did not fall. The space above you filled in.

The call button is quietly going away

179 business profiles tracked, two years of continuous decline in clicks to call, zero call buttons in an AI local pack

Jepto tracked 179 Google Business Profiles belonging to 34 law firms in the United States over two years. Clicks to call fell steadily across that period. Clicks through to the website held up on desktop. It was specifically the call button that slipped.

Law firms are not restoration companies, but the shape of the problem travels. An emergency trade lives on the tap that dials. If Google keeps moving people toward reading rather than ringing, the way they reach you changes even when your ranking does not.

What a restoration company should actually do about it

None of this is a reason to panic, and most of the advice floating around right now is the same advice as last year with the word AI stapled on. Here is what genuinely follows from the data.

1. Stop measuring yourself by rank alone

Position three in a box that no longer appears is worth nothing. Track calls and form fills by week, not just where you sit on a map. If rank is flat and calls are down, you have learned something real about your market rather than about yourself.

2. Put your profile information where an AI can read it without a click

The AI pack writes a summary instead of showing a list. It builds that from what it can confirm about you: services listed properly, hours that are right, service areas that match where you actually go, photos that are recent, reviews that mention the work by name. Vague profiles do not get summarized well, because there is nothing to summarize.

3. Assume the caller will land on your website instead of a call button

If the tap to dial is disappearing from the box, more people arrive on your site first. That means your phone number needs to be the most obvious thing on the page on a phone, not tucked in a footer. It also means somebody has to answer when they ring at two in the morning, because the storm does not wait for office hours.

4. Get your reviews talking about the specific job

A review that says “great service” tells a summarizing system nothing. A review that says the crew arrived at midnight for a burst pipe in a finished basement and had drying equipment running the same night tells it a great deal. Ask for the detail. Most customers will give it if you ask on the day.

5. Look at what the paid slots cost in your area before you dismiss them

We are an SEO company and we would rather you earned the position. But with Local Services Ads at 31 percent visibility, pretending the paid space does not exist is not a strategy. Price it, test it for a month in one city, and decide with numbers.

The honest summary

The local box is getting smaller, the names in it are changing, and the button that made it so valuable to an emergency trade is being removed. Nobody can rank their way out of a box with fewer slots in it. What you can do is be the company whose information is clear enough to be chosen, whose reviews describe real jobs, and whose phone gets answered when it finally rings.

If you want to know how your own profile reads to a system that has to summarize it, we will take a look and tell you straight. No charge and no obligation.
